Take Charge advisors helped Chris get grant funding to fix essential home appliances, and provided ongoing energy efficiency and money-saving advice.

Chris*, living in the Carlisle area, is a parent of seven children and reached out to Take Charge after facing significant challenges at home. Both the family’s washing machine and fridge/freezer had broken, leaving them without essential appliances and no financial means to replace them.

With a large household to manage, the situation created considerable stress and was beginning to affect Chris’s health and wellbeing.

Take Charge assessed the family’s circumstances and supported them in applying for a Charis grant, which helps provide financial relief for energy debts and essential household costs. This grant funded replacements for both appliances at a total value of £608.94.

Chris was referred to the Citizens Advice debt team for ongoing support, and received a full package of energy efficiency and money-saving advice, including:

  • the benefits of smart meters
  • how to use heating controls more effectively
  • efficient cooking methods
  • guidance on using the washing machine and tumble dryer to reduce costs.

Chris was also referred to the Money Advice Team at Citizens Advice Carlisle & Eden for longer-term debt support.

The grant and tailored energy advice made an immediate and meaningful difference. Chris reported reduced stress and an improvement in overall health and wellbeing, with the new appliances providing much-needed stability for the household.
