Supporting Sam with power cuts

Case study

Take Charge helped Sam access a Kingston Trust grant, and provided a full package of energy efficiency and income maximisation advice.

Sam*, based in Bury, Greater Manchester, was referred to Take Charge by SP Electricity North West’s Extra Care Team after experiencing a power cut that caused serious concern for her household.

Sam’s partner has a medical condition that requires hospital-prescribed specialist food, which must be kept refrigerated at all times. The power cut raised fears that any future disruption to electricity could lead to this food spoiling, which could have significant health consequences and would be difficult to replace quickly.

Take Charge supported Sam by helping her access a Kingston Trust grant, specific to her partner’s medical condition, to fund a small household generator. This will allow them to keep their specialist fridge running during any future power cuts.

In addition, Sam received a full package of energy efficiency and income maximisation advice, which included:

  • A benefits check
  • Advice on how to reduce energy bills
  • A fuel voucher to help with immediate energy costs
  • Support with registering for the WaterSure scheme through United Utilities

Thanks to this support, Sam now has greater peace of mind and improved resilience in the face of potential power outages, while also benefiting from ongoing help to manage household bills.
